Ken Ofori-Atta Warned: Return or Face Fugitive Status

Ken Ofori-Atta, the former Finance Minister, has been given a lifeline by Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng, who has agreed to temporarily remove his ‘fugitive’ status.

However, this respite comes with a clear warning – if Ofori-Atta fails to return to Ghana as agreed, he will once again be declared a wanted person.

The Special Prosecutor previously dubbed Ofori-Atta a fugitive after attempts to bring him in to answer corruption allegations proved fruitless.

Now, with Ofori-Atta indicating his return date from a medical trip to the USA, the Office of the Special Prosecutor has withdrawn his name from the wanted list.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the OSP stated, “Mr. Ofori-Atta has been removed from the OSP’s list of wanted persons pending his voluntary return to the jurisdiction as per his stated date. Should he fail to return as agreed, the OSP will take all necessary legal steps to secure his attendance at our office.”

Though the exact return date was not disclosed, reports suggest Ofori-Atta is expected back in Ghana between 14th and 30th May 2025.

The Minority Leader confirmed this in Parliament, prompting an objection from the Majority Leader regarding parliamentary involvement in the matter.

Ofori-Atta, who was visibly affected by the initial fugitive declaration, now faces the choice of returning as agreed or risk once more being branded a fugitive.
