Condemning the Minority’s Hypocrisy in the SALL Representation Debacle

By Innocent Samuel Appiah

The highly debated issue of SALL (Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lipke, and Lolobi) representation in Ghana’s 8th Parliament has once again come to the forefront, shedding light on the minority party’s glaring hypocrisy led by Alexander Afenyo-Markin. The recent threats of a boycott of government business by the minority party, if the Ablekuma North parliamentary results are not declared, starkly contrast their past inaction on the pressing issue of SALL’s representation, calling for a swift condemnation of their blatant inconsistencies.

At the center of this debate is the complex history of SALL’s electoral boundaries, stemming from the creation of the Oti Region from the Volta Region following a Commission of Inquiry in 2017. Despite various legal challenges and subsequent reallocations by the Electoral Commission, voters in SALL were disenfranchised from electing a parliamentary representative in the 2020 polls, only rectified after the 2024 elections.

The shift in Ghana’s political dynamics, particularly with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) now holding a significant majority in Parliament, has brought to light accusations of hypocrisy against the minority National Patriotic Party (NPP). The NPP’s newfound vocal opposition to the government’s handling of SALL’s representation starkly contrasts their past neglect during their time in power, highlighting the complexities of political posturing in addressing critical issues.

The contrasting approaches of the NPP minority and NDC majority in addressing the SALL representation issue raise fundamental questions about the role and responsibilities of political parties in Ghana’s democracy. While the NPP’s recent activism may signal a vibrant democracy, their historical inaction taints the sincerity of their current stance. Conversely, the NDC, as the ruling party, faces scrutiny for not proactively addressing the disenfranchisement of SALL constituents, underscoring the need for inclusive governance and equitable representation for all Ghanaians.

As the debate on SALL representation unfolds in Parliament, it underscores the imperative for a collaborative and principled approach from all political factions to ensure the fair and inclusive representation of marginalized communities. The recent actions and statements by the minority party, alongside the perceived passivity of the majority, illuminate the need for a renewed commitment to democratic principles and accountability within Ghana’s political landscape.

Ultimately, the SALL representation debacle serves as a stark reminder of the broader challenges facing Ghana’s political system, emphasizing the vital importance of upholding democratic values and ensuring equitable representation for all citizens. As Ghana navigates these complex dynamics, it is imperative that political leaders prioritize the interests of all constituents, irrespective of regional affiliations, to uphold the foundations of a fair and inclusive democracy.
