MAHAMA URGED TO ENSURE YOOFI GRANT’S ACCOUNTABILITY AT GIPC

By Innocent Samuel Appiah

President John Dramani Mahama is facing increasing pressure to address the alleged misconduct of former Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) CEO, Mr. Reginal Yoofi Grant. Concerns have been raised over Grant’s tenure extension past the retirement age, prompting calls for accountability and restitution.

The scandal unfolded following revelations of Grant’s continuing role at GIPC despite exceeding the mandatory retirement age of 65. Legal experts, civil society groups, and the public have condemned the irregular extension of his employment contract, highlighting a potential violation of the Constitution.

Renowned lawyer Michael Youri pointed out that Grant’s prolonged stay in office contradicts constitutional provisions on public officer retirement. The public trust in GIPC has been shaken by Grant’s actions, with demands for the return of unlawfully received funds and strict adherence to governance principles.

The current situation not only stains GIPC’s reputation but also hampers its financial stability, already burdened by debt and unpaid contributions. Stakeholders emphasize the urgent need for comprehensive reforms in GIPC and other public institutions to ensure transparency, accountability, and adherence to legal frameworks.

Calls for Grant to refund his earnings following the retirement age breach underscore a pivotal moment for restoring public trust in GIPC. Ghanaian citizens expect a renewed commitment to good governance, marking a significant shift towards institutional integrity and accountability within the nation’s economic landscape.

The push for reforms signals a renewed focus on safeguarding the interests of workers and investors through transparent and responsible institutional management. As Ghanaians demand a reformed and accountable GIPC, the government faces a critical test in delivering substantive changes that uphold the nation’s democratic ideals and economic stability.
