Gov’t to Legislate Law for Organ Donations

By Gifty Boateng

The Government is set to make a life-changing move by introducing new legislation to regulate organ donations, Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah has disclosed.

The NDC administration is gearing up to address the pressing issues surrounding kidney treatment head-on.

President Mahama’s vision is crystal clear – to pioneer a groundbreaking legal framework that will slash the exorbitant costs associated with kidney ailments.

This comes after a surge in public uproar in 2023 when proposed kidney treatment costs skyrocketed from GH¢380 to a staggering GH¢765.42.

In a bold move, the previous government had laid the groundwork for a law on tissue organ donations and transplants. However, this crucial legislation never saw the light of day, languishing in the corridors of power.

During a powerful speech at the First Sky Group’s annual thanksgiving service in Accra, President Mahama’s unwavering commitment to action was relayed by Chief of Staff Debrah.

The President pledged swift action once a new Health Minister takes charge, ensuring that consultations with key stakeholders like Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and traditional authorities are at the heart of the decision-making process.

The urgency of this matter was highlighted by an impassioned plea from Eric Seddy Kutotse, the Executive Chairman of First Sky Group.

His call for a solid legislative foundation for organ donation resonates deeply as the company has poured over GHc36 million into supporting kidney patients at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

Now, with plans underway for four new kidney transplants by the end of January 2025, the First Sky Group’s dedication to saving lives is unwavering.

Their tireless efforts, including funding free dialysis and kidney transports, underscore the essence of their Corporate Social Responsibility.

Not stopping there, the Group is spearheading the establishment of a state-of-the-art Kidney Transport Centre in Ghana, aiming to provide cutting-edge medical care locally, rather than patients having to seek treatment abroad.

President Mahama’s vision for job creation and economic growth is crystal clear. He envisions a symbiotic relationship between government policy-making and private sector innovation, with a laser focus on wealth and job creation.

As we commemorate the 22nd Thanksgiving celebration, let us heed the President’s call to seize the opportunity to build a brighter future, one job at a time. Let’s all join hands and forge a path towards prosperity together!
