The Community Focus Foundation Ghana (CFF-Ghana) has issued a compelling demand for the immediate arrest of Bryan Acheampong, the Member of Parliament for the Abetifi constituency.
The group expressed dismay over remarks made by the MP and Minister for Food and Agriculture, insinuating that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would go to any extent to retain power, regardless of the means.
In a statement released by Whatsup news, CFF emphasized instances where Mr. Acheampong allegedly made disturbing comments without facing repercussions.
One such instance occurred at a rally in Kwahu, Eastern Region on April 8th, 2023, where the Minister reportedly assured party supporters of the NPP’s resolve to remain in power.
The MP’s recent remarks during a campaign rally on August 10, 2024, further fueled the group’s concerns as Acheampong adamantly declared that the NDC would never win the 2024 elections by any means necessary.
CFF highlighted the infamous Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, during which Acheampong, then serving as Minister of State at the Ministry of National Security, was implicated in violent acts against innocent citizens.
The group condemned the perceived inaction of the Police administration towards holding Acheampong accountable, citing selective enforcement of the law.
The group urged the Police to act decisively and arrest Acheampong for his ‘treasonable’ comments, arguing that mere warnings from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) were insufficient in addressing such serious allegations.
CFF urged the National Peace Council and other civic groups to denounce Acheampong’s inflammatory statements, stressing the need for collective condemnation of actions that undermine national peace and unity.
While the group awaits potential police action, past refusals to arrest Acheampong suggest a potential challenge in enforcing accountability.
Previous attempts to address similar incidents were dismissed by authorities citing political rhetoric as grounds for inaction, raising doubts about the efficacy of future interventions.
