CLOGSAG Initiates Nationwide Strike Over Salary Structure Delay

Acceding to an unparalleled decision, the eminent members of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG) have commenced an open-ended strike action nationwide from today, Wednesday July 3, 2024.

This move comes despite an entreaty from the National Labour Commission (NLC) for a conclave. The strike action has been instigated by the government’s failure to actualize a novel salary framework as agreed upon by the Association and the government, represented by the Fair Wages and Salary Commission (FWSC).

In a communiqué issued by CLOGSAG, it was elucidated that the call for strike action arose due to the government’s inability to meet the deadline stipulated in the accord reached on August 31, 2022, pertaining to the implementation of the new salary structure and service conditions for the members.

Following an impromptu meeting at their headquarters in Accra, the leadership of CLOGSAG unanimously decided to embark on a nationwide strike in light of the government’s faltering to comply with the agreed schedule set forth on August 31, 2022.

Dr. Bampoe-Addo, in a recent assembly, directed all Civil Service and Local Government service personnel to refrain from work until further notice, with instructions to cease operations at all CLOGSAG secretariat offices.

Efforts to negotiate with pertinent parties such as the Finance Ministry, the Labour Commission, and the Fair Wages and Salary Structure since 2022 have proven futile, as mentioned by Dr. Bampoe-Addo during the conference.

Prompted by an official letter dated June 21, 2024, signed by Isaac Bampoe Addo, the Executive Secretary of CLOGSAG, which forewarned of an imminent strike if no favorable response was received from the government.

The protracted delay in implementing the new salary structure as per the Memorandum of Understanding signed in January 2022, which originally stipulated January 2023 as the effective date, has led to this decisive action from CLOGSAG. Asserting their resolve, CLOGSAG conveyed,

“The Association has shown immense patience, but the time for action is now. Unless the new salary structure is promptly put into effect, our members will proceed with a nationwide strike from Wednesday, 3rd July, 2024.”

As the members await an overdue resolution, the National Labour Commission has summoned the leadership of the Association for a meeting scheduled for tomorrow, albeit the decision to attend remains pending till the dawn of the day.
