Former President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to implement strategic measures aimed at reducing the cost of Hajj if re-elected in the December 7, 2024 elections.
Speaking during Eid prayers in Accra, Mahama empathized with the challenges faced by Muslim pilgrims due to the current high costs of the journey.
Mahama highlighted his previous efforts during his presidency to keep Hajj fares affordable, citing a rate of GHc11,900.00 compared to the current GHc75,000.00. He emphasized the importance of ensuring accessibility of the pilgrimage to all Muslims who wish to undertake this sacred journey.
“I understand the financial burden posed by the current cost of the Hajj pilgrimage, and I am committed to making it more affordable for the Ghanaian Muslim community,” Mahama expressed.
Known for his contributions to the Muslim community, Mahama was lauded for initiatives such as upgrading the Tamale Airport to facilitate Hajj travels.
In contrast, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has faced criticism for his lack of active engagement on issues affecting Muslims, with some questioning his commitment to addressing concerns such as access to Hajj and religious freedoms for Muslim schoolgirls.
As the election approaches, Mahama’s pledge to lower the cost of Hajj stands as a key promise in his campaign, focusing on making the pilgrimage more accessible and affordable for all members of the Muslim community.
