UCC Vice Chancellor Challenged Over Contract Extension

Embattled Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, has officially entered a defense in response to the ongoing legal battle questioning the legitimacy of his contract extension.

The case has sparked controversy and upheaval within the university community.

In a legal notice dated May 13th, 2024, Prof. Boampong’s lawyer, Dennis Adjei Dwomo Esq from the Law Plus law firm, entered appearance on behalf of the Vice Chancellor at the High Court in Cape Coast.

The lawsuit, which names the University of Cape Coast as the First Defendant, alleges that the renewal of Prof. Boampong’s appointment by the University Council was unlawful.

The legal action was initiated by John Mevemeo, an alumnus of the university, who contends that the decision to extend Prof. Boampong’s term as Vice Chancellor beyond his scheduled retirement in 2025 is in violation of constitutional provisions and university statutes.

Mr. Mevemeo seeks a declaration that the contract extension is invalid, and an injunction against the University and the Vice Chancellor from enforcing the decision.

According to the plaintiff, the University Council failed to adhere to the prescribed procedures outlined in the University of Cape Coast Statutes 2016 for appointing a Vice Chancellor.

Mr. Mevemeo argues that the Council’s actions bypassed established protocols and were therefore illegitimate.

The case has raised concerns about governance and transparency within the university, with allegations of favoritism and disregard for institutional rules.

The outcome of this legal dispute will have far-reaching implications for the future leadership and administration of the University of Cape Coast.
