In a bold move against the contentious sale of six SSNIT Hotels to Food and Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong, North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa is rallying the youth to protest the deal.
Despite resistance from SSNIT officials, who are determined to proceed with the sale, Ablakwa has taken a firm stance against the transaction between SSNIT and Rock City.
In a communique dated May 23 addressed to the Greater Accra Regional Police Command, Ablakwa declared plans for a large-scale demonstration to oppose the sale of strategic assets including La Beach Hotel, La Palm Royal Beach Resort, Elmina Beach Resort, Ridge Royal Hotel, Busua Beach Resort, and Trust Lodge Hotel.
The six hotels, some which are said to be doing well and have recorded massive profits are being sold to Rock-City, a faily new hotel with very little to show about its’ balance sheet compared to the SSNIT HOTELS.
The protest, scheduled for June 18, will begin at the Labadi Beach Hotel and culminate at the Jubilee House where a petition will be presented to President Akufo-Addo. Ablakwa has also sought intervention from the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to investigate the matter.
Despite widespread condemnation and outcry from labor unions and civil society, the parties involved remain undeterred in their efforts to sell a 60% stake in the hotels.
Ablakwa has emphasized the need for legal measures to prevent politicians from engaging in such transactions, signaling his intent to introduce a Private Member’s Bill in Parliament to curb such practices.
As the public mobilizes against the sale of state assets to political figures, Ablakwa’s proactive approach underscores the growing resistance against what many perceive as an alarming trend of unethical dealings and conflicts of interest in Ghana’s governance.
