Accusations of impropriety swirl around Agric Minister, Bryan Acheampong, as questions arise over the sale of State-owned SSNIT assets to his private company, Rock City Group. In response to mounting pressure and calls for transparency,
Acheampong asserted that he is merely the owner of Rock City Group and does not play an active role in its operations.
During an interview with Joy FM on Tuesday 21st May, Acheampong, who represents the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the Member of Parliament for Abetifi, clarified that he serves as a non-executive member of Rock City Group.
He emphasized that any transactions between SSNIT and Rock City Group are conducted independently of his direct involvement. The controversy stems from revelations made by North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who disclosed that negotiations were underway for SSNIT to sell its shares in six hotels to Rock City Group, owned by Acheampong.
The MP highlighted potential conflicts of interest in the deal and has petitioned for an investigation into the matter by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice.
While SSNIT contends it is only selling shares in four hotels to Rock City Group based on competitive bidding, labor unions, including the Trades Union Congress (TUC), have raised concerns over the sale.
TUC representatives criticized the lack of transparency and questioned the rationale behind reducing the number of hotels involved in the transaction.
Amid growing scrutiny and calls for accountability, Acheampong’s remarks have brought some clarity to his role in the controversial hotel deal.
However, the demands for transparency and adherence to proper procedures continue to escalate, with labor unions warning of potential industrial action if the sale is not reconsidered.
As the investigation progresses, revelations and statements from all involved parties are eagerly awaited to shed light on the contentious sale of SSNIT assets to a company with ties to a government official.
The unfolding saga underscores the importance of accountability and oversight in public-private transactions to maintain trust and integrity in governance.
