In his unbridled attempt to tag himself with achieving a significance in the failed NPP government, Vice President and NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is claiming a successful intervention in preventing sabotage of the Electricity Company of Ghana’s paperless system.
Bawumia revealed that certain IT Department staff at ECG were apprehended for attempting to derail the digitalization efforts by infecting the computer system with ransomware.
The Vice President who was touted, an economic whiz-kid by the governing party, ( NPP) during their 2016 electioneering campaign, has been clinching on straws to hold his head up following a depressing performance of the NPP government in the management of the country’s economy.
Dr. Bawumiah has since switched to listing himself as the brain behind Ghana’s digital evolution, a claim that has been spat on by his political opponents.
According to an ECG staff who wanted to remain anonymous (for obvious reason), “the Vice President had nothing to do with the auditing that identified the risk of attacks at ECG recently. It’s a cheap popularity stunt and he must be ignored”.
“The Vice President must be talking about measures badly needed to reduce the intermittent power supply ‘Dumsor’, he iterated.
Addressing the 2024 annual AGM of Anti-corruption Agencies in Africa, Bawumia emphasized the importance of digital transformation in enhancing revenue mobilization.
According to Dr. Bawumiah, the saboteurs’ actions disrupted the system’s performance, leading to its temporary collapse.
The VEEP revealed that following investigations by National Security, the culprits were arrested, and the system was restored to normal operation.
“They just kept it at GH450 million every month so, I said we need to send in a team to digitalise the new collection of the Electricity Company of Ghana, so we sent in a team, and we began the process of digitalise.
“Can you believe that workers within the system sabotaged it? They put in ransomware into the whole system and the system essentially collapsed. We had to send in National Security to eventually find that it was some of the staff at the IT department who were culpable,” he stated.
Typical of him, Vice President reiterated his commitment to championing digitalization initiatives, underscoring the significance of combatting corruption and ensuring the integrity of government systems.
