Man Sues Betway Ghana for Fraud, Seeks Recovery of GHS 3.3 million

A Ghanaian gambler has filed a lawsuit against Betway Ghana, the operators of the popular sports betting platform. The aggrieved gambler is alleging fraud and is seeking the recovery of a substantial sum of money.

The plaintiff, one Sylvester Arkorful-Quaye who holds two accounts with the defendant company, accuses Betway Ghana of blocking his accounts and unlawfully taking his winnings.

In the court documents, the plaintiff states that he had two different accounts with the defendant – Tigo and MTN Accounts – and that in August 2023, he placed various bets with both accounts. Some of these bets resulted in winnings, while others were lost.

According to Arkoful-Quaye, the bets won on his Tigo Account amounted to a total of GHS 857,000.00. He further claims to have made a withdrawal of GHS 22,700.00 into his Tigo Mobile Money Account. On his MTN Account, the plaintiff states that he won a total of GHS 2,535,948.00, withdrawing GHS 68,000.00 into his MTN Mobile Money Account.

However, he alleges that Betway Ghana subsequently blocked both of his accounts, preventing him from accessing the remaining balance. When the accounts were eventually reopened, the plaintiff claimed that his Tigo Account had been wiped clean, with no trace of the remaining balance, and the bets he previously won on his MTN Account were declared void.

The plaintiff has accused Betway Ghana of perpetrating fraud, detailing specific allegations in the court documents.

Despite numerous attempts to retrieve the total amount of GHS 3,302,248.00, the plaintiff asserts that Betway Ghana has not provided a satisfactory resolution. As a result, he is filing the suit to force Betway to pay him his outstanding funds.

In the lawsuit, the plaintiff seeks the recovery of the full amount, GHS 3,302,248.00, from Betway Ghana.

Additionally, the plaintiff requests interest at the commercial bank rate on the sum from the date of the winning bets to the date of final payment. The lawsuit also includes a request for the defendant to cover the cost of the proceedings, including legal fees.
