The Member of Parliament for Juaboso constituency and Ranking Member for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has revealed that the recent sod-cutting ceremony for the conversion of Bono Regional Hospital in Sunyani into a Teaching Hospital was nothing more than a deceptive stunt orchestrated by the government.
The Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, proudly cut the symbolic sod for the project on Saturday amidst much fanfare. However, Hon. Mintah Akandoh, speaking on behalf of the Minority in Parliament, disputed the government’s claim, stating that the 2024 budget presented last Wednesday did not allocate any funds for the construction or expansion of the Sunyani hospital.
“It is evident that there is no government policy, financial allocation, or political will to undertake such an expansion of the facility into a teaching facility, and the minister is fully aware that there is no allocation in the 2024 budget,” the MP revealed.
According to Hon. Akandoh, the sod-cutting event was yet another example of the government’s attempts to deceive the people of Bono and the nation as a whole. He argued that the timing, amid an ongoing International Monetary Fund program and approaching elections, raises suspicions, especially when the project was not included in the budget.
Furthermore, Hon. Akandoh reminded Ghanaians of the government’s previous failures to fund promised projects over the years.
Key among these failed promises is the demolition of the functioning La General Hospital with the promise of rebuilding it into an ultra-modern hospital. For more than five years now, the hospital has been left in rubble.
As the Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, Hon. Akandoh has vowed to hold the government accountable for its actions and ensure that the healthcare needs of Ghanaians are adequately addressed.
