Ghanaian Social Justice Forum Calls for Cancellation of End-of-Year Parties Due to Economic Crisis

Civil society organisation, the New Ghana Social Justice Forum (NGSJF) has issued a call to the President of Ghana, Heads of Public Institutions, and State Agencies to cancel all upcoming End of Year Parties in public institutions throughout the country.

The group is citing Ghana’s dire financial situation, which has been exacerbated by the government’s corruption and mismanagement. The NGSJF believes that hosting extravagant parties at this time would be a betrayal of the nation and an exploitation of scarce resources.

At the heart of this petition is Ghana’s fragile economy, which is currently experiencing hyperinflation at a rate of 35%, one of the highest in decades.

More than 850,000 Ghanaians have already been pushed into poverty, joining the 6 million citizens who are already struggling to make ends meet. Furthermore, investors and bondholders are now at risk of not receiving their payments due to the unstable economic climate.

The District Assembly Common Fund, crucial for the development of social infrastructure at the local level, is currently in arrears. This has resulted in stalled projects that are vital for the well-being of communities across the country. Additionally, the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) has been mortgaged, causing delays in the construction and improvement of education infrastructure.

In the group’s opinion, the current economic crisis facing Ghana demands that tough choices be made. By cancelling the upcoming End of Year Parties, public institutions can demonstrate their commitment to addressing the pressing needs of the Ghanaian people. The NGSJF hopes that the call is heeded, ensuring that the available resources are used wisely and efficiently to stabilize the economy and improve the lives of those who are currently suffering.
