The former National Organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku, has fidgeted over concerns expressed by the British High Commissioner in Ghana, Harriet Thompson, over worsening corruption and a degrading media freedom environment in Ghana.
ON Accra based JoyNews, Awuku, who landed juicy political appointment without any experience after school, presumed to advice the British High Commissioner to look out lest she opens her mouth too wide..
“Sometimes I beg to differ with the way she also expresses her opinion. That doesn’t mean that we are gagging people. But I think that there’s definitely a code as well for diplomats and I think sometimes she might also be a bit cautious with the way she interferes in the governance process of the country,” he said on Monday.
Suddenly, diplomatic concern about press freedom and corruption under Akufo-Addo has become interference in Ghana’s internal affairs according to Awuku who currently heads the National Lotteries Authority.
Over the weekend, the British High Commissioner to Ghana, had in an interview on Joy News spoken a number of issues including corruption and what she thinks that is a strong arm that Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng is showing, and the shrinking media space in Ghana.
She had said it was worrying that corruption perception has been worsening.
But speaking on Joy Prime, Sammy Awuku said “she is been very eloquent in interfering in the governance process of a country.”
He accused the High Commissioner of being unbalanced in her views. On her call for expenditure cuts, the NLA D-G explained that “once she begins to also express these opinions, they are good, but it’s important that she also becomes very balanced in what’s also happening back home in our country.”
“She’s talking about cutting down costs, which I also find very interesting which is so good for the midst of this UK is also investing more in ammunition to support Ukraine, to the detriment of the British people, who are also feeling the pinch.”
