The corruption-prone Akufo Addo administration has been embroiled in another scandal, where the government has reportedly paid an astonishing GHC 30 million for the printing of T-shirts emblazoned with the “Free SHS” logo.
Available documents claim the government allegedly distributed the shirts to secondary school students to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy of the Akufo Addo administration.
The can of worms on this scandal was opened by the Member of Parliament for Builsa South and deputy ranking member for the education committee Dr. Clement Apaak is demanding answers from the Minister for Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum over the procurement of free SHS branded T-shirts for students.
According to Accra-based Starr News, it had uncovered the printing and distribution of the shirts to schools especially in the Eastern Region estimated to cost more than GHC 30 million.
Speaking to Starr News Dr. Apaak disclosed he’s in the process of filing an urgent question to summon the sector minister over the development.
According to him, such resources could be put to better use such as addressing challenges dogging the free SHS policy.
The T-shirts are being procured by the Free Senior High School Secretariat at the office of the Presidency.
The cost of procuring the shirts has not been disclosed, but a t-shirt of such quality will cost barely GHC 30, this means the amount would sum up to approximately one million (1 million) shirts.
It is unclear how many students received the t-shirts, as this scandal promises to add to the tally of scores that had been attributed to the Akufo Addo administration.
