NDC Vows To Prosecute Akufo-Addo’s Appointees For Causing Financial In Komenda Sugar Factory

A future National Democratic Congress (NDC) government will prosecute appointees of the Akufo-Addo government whose actions and or inactions have led to a waste-away of the Komenda sugar factory, says former Deputy Attorney General, Dominic Ayine.

“What we have seen today is a clear-cut situation of causing financial loss to the state. They undervalued the factory that was built with $50 million at $12 million and they are doing so in order to sell it off. Secondly, the factory was left to rot and for many years, nothing was done and they had to borrow money in order to refurbish it “That again from an accounting point of view is causing financial loss to the state and the next NDC government in 2025 will be prosecuting those who are responsible,” Dr. Ayine outlined his reasons.

Mr. Ayine said this during a visit to the site of the factory by Minority MPs on Parliament’s Select Committee on trade and tourism, of which he is a member.

The $36.5 million facility is yet to be operationalized, six years after it was commissioned by the previous Mahama-led NDC administration.

President Akufo-Addo appears to be confused as to what to do with the factory after he took office.

Earlier in the year, when the chiefs from the Komenda traditional area paid him a visit he promised them that the factory would be operationalized in April. It is June and still, the factory stands idle, rotting away.

President Akufo-Addo’s shocking abandonment of the factory has questioned his much-touted policy of ‘One district, One factory’ under which every district in the country is supposed to have a factory.

And yet even though he did not build the Komenda sugar factory, he has been unable put it into operation for over six years since becoming President, no matter what the teething problem of the factory could have been.

According to the minority, the previous administration had set in motion everything related to the factory, including funds secured for raw materials.

According to the Ranking Member on the select committee, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, the NDC government secured a $24.54 million loan from the Indian government to advance the course of the factory, but the NPP administration just abandoned the process.
