The United States Embassy to Ghana has shown solidarity for the LGBTQI+ community in Ghana with a tweet.
The tweet comes ahead of the commemoration of gay pride in the US in which homosexuals, lesbians, the queer and practitioners of intersex march through major streets hoisting gay colors to foster gay rights awareness.
In the post, the Embassy posted a picture of US President Joe Biden accompanied by a post with the hashtag #Pride2022.
It said the US, “reaffirms that LGBTQI+ rights are human rights and that no group should be excluded from those protections, regardless of race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, sex characteristics, disability status, age, religion or belief. #Pride2022”.
Last year, the Embassy in Accra flew illegally a pride flag to show solidarity with the LGBTQI community in Ghana, despite the promotion of homosexuality being illegal in Ghana.
The Pride flag had been hoisted for more than 24 hours,
The outgone US Ambassador Sullivan said the LGBTQI community had a tough time in 2021.
The US Embassy had also held a close door reception for top Ghanaian advocates of LGBTQI.
Meanwhile, the US solidarity for gay rights is coming at a time that the Minority in Ghana has accused the Majority MP Chairing the constitutional and legal committee of deliberately delaying the passage of the anti-gay bill into law.
