Togolese authorities have reportedly intercepted some 40 tons of maize that was being smuggled into Ghana.
A control team from the Togolese Ministry of Commerce is said to have acted on a tip-off and chased down smugglers who were trying to smuggle out the maize at midnight on Wednesday.
The names of the smugglers are not readily available but the authorities have said they will be prosecuted.
According to reports, On May 16, 2022, a Togo Inter-ministerial decree ordered the border officials to regulate the exit of basic necessities and food items from Togo as a way of ensuring that there are no shortages.
“In accordance with the regulations, not only the truck and the stock are seized, but also a criminal prosecution will be initiated against those responsible,” said Kodjo Adedze, Togo’s Minister of Trade and Private Sector.
“The Government is at work but the whole population will have to cooperate to avoid a food shortage in the country”, he added.
