A Don at the University for Development Studies, Michael Ayamga-Adongo, has observed that current economic hardships in Ghana is due to vulgar corruption rather than COVID-19 and the Russia/Ukraine war.
For him, the evidence of this was on display during the ruling NPP’s regional executives election when money flowed like sand.
“Every day we receive bad news about our economy. If we are not being downgraded it is news that we are now among the countries most likely to default. The working class needs three and half times their salaries to be able to afford the life they had before Akufo Addo and Bawumia,” he said.
“We have taxed everything to the point of taxing people for having more than 100 GHS to spend. I cannot believe that despite the levels of suffering and destitution in our country today, we are seeing such grotesque and vulgar display of money just to elect party officials.”
Over the weekend, the NPP elected regional executives and the open display of money have left many wondering about the dizzying heights of the Kleptocracy that Akufo-Addo has been leading.
In the Ashanti Region alone, one contestant for Regional Chairman, Asare Bediako, reveals that he paid Ghc1,000 to each of the party’s 802 delegates and yet was not elected because the delegates had received bigger bribes from higher bidders.
Last week, the NPP’s Vice Chairman for Sagnarigu in the Northern Region revealed that the government had shared the COBVID-19 funds with party apparatchiks and that she was given only Ghc100, 000.
