Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, has confirmed his New Patriotic Party (NPP) affiliation saying it is a family thing.
In an interview on Som Pa TV, the man who is said to have used his captaincy of the senior national team for dirty politics against the Ayew Brothers revealed that his NPP affiliation is through his father who was once employed by one of the two foundational thinkers of the NPP party philosophy – Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia.
“My family has a link with NPP because Busia employed my dad, he brought him from Wenchi to Accra. So, I was born in Accra and that is why people tag me as such, which I do understand,” Gyan said.
But he claimed he is politically neutral though some people have asked him to run to become an NPP MP for Wenchi.
“For me, I’m neutral. If NPP offers me a duty to perform, why not? I’m a patriotic citizen and I think about the people… So any government that feels I can help with a course and chooses me to lead, I’m ready,” he said.
When he was leading the Black Stars, Gyan was accused of using his NPP affiliation to throw his weight about leading to conflicts with brothers, Andre and Jordan Ayew.
Asamoah Gyan was captain of the Black Stars when the team went to misbehave in the Brazil 2014 world cup.
The rivalry with Ayews has apparently continued even after retiring from the Black Stars, with Gyan reportedly taking to social media to post cynical comments after the Black Stars’ miserable performance in the 2022 Africa cup of nations.
