Whatsup News has gathered that an inmate at the Ashaiman Police Station, Ebenezer Dosu, had died in police cells from hunger.
According to Oliver Barket-Vormawor, one of the conveners of the youth group #FixTheCountry who had been locked up in the same cell as the deceased, Ebenezer Dosu had been wrongfully locked up by an unnamed police officer after Mr. Dosu refused to allow him [the officer] to extort money from him.
“I am sad to report that an inmate at the Ashaiman Police Station has passed away. Ebenezer Dosu was arrested by a police officer who was extorting money from him. The police officer arrested and kept Ebenezer from evening 6 pm till 11 pm; and when he could not pay the money he was demanding, he went to lock him up at 11:30 pm.”
Mr. Barker-Vormawor continues with the damning revelation: “As the police normally do when they are extorting money, no official entries were made and he was locked up without due process.”
Apparently, the night before his death, Dosu complained of hunger and stomach ache throughout the night but was ignored.
There are reports that the only punishment given to the rogue police officer involved in the extortion case is interdiction. He may return to post after the interdiction and perhaps target the next victim.
A few weeks ago, Mr. Barker-Vormawor who had himself been illegally arrested by state security agents quickly organised for food to be donated to inmates of the Ashaiman police cells after he was released.
But strangely, the Police Command had refused to allow the inmates from taking the donated food items, with the police command claiming it does not allow private individuals to donate food items to inmates.
Yet, in the past, the same Police Command had received tonnes of food items from individuals and celebrities like “Shatta Wale” and “Bulldog”.
The Police administration has since remained tight lipped on the issue.
