Late Sir John’s European Bank Accounts and Properties Pop up in Court

The late former head of the Forestry Commission of Ghana, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, alias Sir John, had several bank accounts in Europe, according to an ongoing messy court case over his estate instigated by his widow, Mrs. Agness Owusu-Afriyie.

It is not clear if Mr. Owusu-Afriyie opened these European bank accounts before or after he entered public office and whether he declared them as part of his assets while he headed the Forestry Commission.

According to reports, the revelation bubbled up in court when Mrs. Owusu-Afriyie expressed unhappiness about not being allocated anything from the European bank accounts and was rather only allocated shares from the late lawyer’s properties in Ghana.

The European accounts and properties are said to have been left out of Sir John’s will while he was alive. Reportedly, willed the accounts, notably in the UK, to his two nephews Michael Owusu and Kwabena Amoateng and a niece, Ruth Korkor.

Apparently, because the foreign accounts and properties were not included in his official will, executioners of the will left them out.

Mrs. Owusu-Afriyie is reported to have said that she has no intention of challenging the will and that even though she toiled with her husband, she accepts his wishes.

She reportedly sued Charles Owusu and one Nana Boakye Akeampong of Old Tafo who were jointly appointed by the late Sir John as Executors of his Will, asking the court for an injunction on the execution of the will until the whole case is heard.
