NIA Calls For Extension Of SIM Card Re-Registration Deadline To End Of Year - WhatsUp News

NIA Calls For Extension Of SIM Card Re-Registration Deadline To End Of Year

The Director of Administration at the National Identification Authority (NIA), Cecilia Erzuah, has asked the government to extend the ongoing SIM card re-registration exercise to the end of the year.

The call was made in an interaction with the Minority members on the Communication Committee of Parliament on Tuesday, February 22 at the NIA headquarters in Accra,

She points out that there is too much pressure on Ghanaians due to the short period for the registration exercise.

“A lot of people haven’t received their cards, there are people who did double, triple registration and the system has arrested their cards. All these cards have to be released otherwise all these people will lose their SIM,” she said.

Originally, the SIM Card re-registration which started last year is scheduled to end in March 2022. However, the process has suffered a lot of logjams with many Ghanaians having to queue for days without getting registered.

Cecilia Erzuah added that by the stringent deadline that the Ministry of Communications has given for the registration exercise, unnecessary pressure has been put on Ghanaians to register.

“I think they should extend to the end of the year. What is the rush for? They should extend to the end of the year so that people can register for their cards. They are putting unnecessary pressure on Ghanaians,” she observed.

The Minority Lawmakers had been on a fact-finding mission to the NIA ahead of a planned appearance of the Chief Executive Officer of the NIA, Professor Ken Attafuah before parliament on Wednesday.
