Students of the Savelugu Senior High School in the Northern rioted on Sunday, February 20 launched a massive riot over what they say is unwholesome food that the school’s kitchen feeds them.
Videos of the riots capture students pelting the school’s dining hall while chanting, “we will not eat.”
According to reports, the students were incensed because the school has been feeding them expired food.
Critics are of the opinion that the confusion in Savelugu is symptomatic of the inability of a debt-ridden Akufo Addo administration to properly fund the Free Senior High School (SHS) which it had touted as its main policy.
Dangerously, these unwholesome foods include, expired milk, which can be especially hazardous to health because of milk’s propensity to cause food poisoning, and also expired tinned sardines.
Some of the students have alleged that colleagues have fallen sick after eating the expired food served them by the school.
Some students who have spoken to journalists anonymously have also complained that the school does not have stable electricity.
The students have said that they have complained several times to the school authorities but the authorities have ignored their complaints, hence the riot.
