In a rather suspicious cheer-leading stunt, renowned African-American televangelist T.D Jakes has been full of praises for [resident Akufo Addo for having “completely turned it around” the Ghanaian economy and made it one of the wealthiest in Africa.
T.D Jakes, a close pal of Archbishop Duncan Williams known to be a powerful lobbyist in the Akufo Addo administration read all the accolades from a prepared speech that critics think was crafted for him by the Jubilee House lobbyists.
Unbeknownst to T.D Jakes, however, under President Akufo Addo, international rating agencies like Moody’s and Fitch have downgraded Ghana’s creditworthiness to the lowest ever in the history of the country.
This is because the Akufo Addo administration had practically run the economy aground with unprecedented public debt which had shot it to some 80% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The last time Ghana’s debt had reached that level was pre-2000 when the country was eventually forced to opt for the Highly Indebted Poor Country (HIPC) programme of the Bretton Woods Institutions of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
Ghana’s public debt is over GHC 300 billion, and more than half of that figure was racked up under the Akufo Addo administration that critics have rated as one of the poorest in investment in social infrastructure.
The country has also recorded some unprecedented levels of corruption under the government, with the President himself having been accused by his appointed Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu to have personally supervised corruption in the dubious Agyapa Royalty deal.
That episode earned President Akufo Addo the nickname, “Mother Serpent of Corruption”.
Despite these clear anomalies, T.D Jakes while introducing the Ghanaian leader to his audience as one of the speakers for his upcoming summit on leadership was full of praise for Akufo Addo.
“I have, for some time, watched with amazement…Ghana is one of Africa’s wealthiest countries; he [President Akufo-Addo] has completely turned it around…Under President Akufo-Addo’s leadership, Ghana has emerged as a booming tech centre – even welcoming Twitter”.
Aside from that, T.D. Jakes notes the widely acknowledges achievement of President Akufo Addo who launched the Return programme that has seen a lot of African- Americans visit Ghana and have even nationalised.
“President Akufo-Addo is also working to transform Ghana into key travel destinations, particularly for Americans but particularly, for African-Americans and the African diaspora and aggressively promoting investment in the country,” T.D Jakes noted.
The preacher’s entire praise has robbed off differently on critics who are certain, it was a mere public relations stunt.
