Chief Justice To Probe Alleged Assault On Court Bailiff By Bodyguard Of Assin North MP

The Supreme Court has ordered an investigation into an allegation that the personal bodyguard of Assin North MP, James Gyakye Quayson, assaulted a Bailiff who had been sent to serve a court process on the MP.

A 7-member panel, comprising Justices Jones Dotse, as President, Nene Amegatcher, Gertrude Torkonor, Yoni Kulendi, Agnes Dordzi, Mariama Owusu, and Prof. Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu, directed the Registrar, Matthew Antiaye, to submit a detailed report on the alleged assault.

Once submitted, the report will be forwarded to the Chief Justice for investigation.

The court was told that the embattled Member of Parliament instructed his bodyguard to throw out the bailiff who had gone to serve him with court processes at his office at the Job 600.

Joshua Baming, the Bailiff, said in an affidavit, that he arrived at Mr. Quayson’s office at Job 600 and introduced himself and then made it known he was there to serve a court process on the MP who has been injuncted by the Supreme Court from holding himself out as MP.

Mr. Quayson, allegedly, refused to entertain him and asked his personal assistant to show the bailiff out.

According to the bailiff, the inability of the personal assistant to see him, only got Mr. Gyakye ordering his bodyguard to throw him out.

It is not clear if serving court processes on an MP in the absence of the Speaker is acceptable because per the constitution, such processes are to be served through the Speaker.

However, the Speaker is out of the country for a medical checkup.
