Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, and his MPs in Parliament were not included in an invitation that Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, threw to the Minority’s leadership over the e-levy.
A January 25 letter from the Finance Minister to Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, for the meeting on Thursday, did not mention the Majority at all.
“I wish to confirm our discussion yesterday for a meeting with the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament on Thursday, 27th January 2022, at 9:00 am. The meeting will discuss, among others, developments around the E-Levy and the way forward,” the letter said.
And the letter was copied to the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, the Minister of State for Finance, Deputy Minister of Finance, Chief Director of the Ministry of Finance and the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs.
The indication is that the ego trip that the Majority has made the whole debate on the e-levy into has made them repulsive to the Finance Ministry which has realized it cannot rely on the NPP MPs.
Ahead of the meeting, however, the Minority Leader has called Ofori-Atta “deceptive” and accused him of seeking to tax people’s savings and capital.
