The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has invoked the blood of the eight (8) people murdered during the 2020 general elections in reaction to claims by controversial Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Adukwei Mensah, that the elections were the most peaceful in the history of the country.
Even though the election was with the highest death toll caused by indiscriminate shooting of civilians by security agents alongside an election petition following flip-flopping presidential results, the tone-death Jean Mensah insisted it was historic, credible and cost-effective.
Jean Mensah expressed her dubious views of the elections at the just-ended High-level Regional Parliamentary Seminar of the ECOWAS Parliament in Winneba.
“The blood of all these 8 innocent citizens is surely on the head of Madam Jean Mensah and Nana Akufo Addo, the ultimate beneficiaries of these heinous crimes; so she should not come out in October (10 months after the Elections) and just say in a blasé manner that the Police should investigate,” the NDC said in a statement.
The statement dated 17th October 2021, was signed by the NDC’s Director of Elections, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah.
It points out that the 2020 elections were the worst in the history of the country, resulting in the murder of eight people, disenfranchisement of the people of the so-called SALL (Santrokofi, Akpafu, Lolobi and Likpe) and ultimately an election petition.
The NDC pointed out that incidentally, the EC Chairperson had been addressing an event by the ECOWAS regional body, whose protocols the 2020 elections had vandalized.
The NDC also noted that Jean Mensah also destroyed the Interparty Advisory Committee (IPAC) which for a long time had made critical inputs into the country’s election governance.
“For the first time in the history of the EC, Political parties were not involved in the drafting of the C.I (127) as was the practice in the past, where the initial processes and consultations were all done together with the Political Parties at the Committee level before it was brought to the Plenary and subsequently to Parliament. It is therefore not surprising that there were numerous flaws and errors in the C.I (127) and it had to be returned to the EC on more than one occasion,” the NDC said.
It questioned why the EC Chairperson who claims the elections were free and fair had hidden behind technicalities to avoid mounting the dock during the election petition.
“In any case if the elections were as free and fair as she claimed and she had nothing to hide, why did she refuse to testify in court and had to hide behind technicalities when she was required to give an account of her stewardship during the Election Petition? Any truthful person would have taken advantage of that opportunity to come into the dock and vindicate him or herself as was done by her predecessor Dr. Afari Gyan during the 2013 Election Petition.”
The biggest opposition party expressed worry that with Jean Mensah’s posturing, the 2024 elections could experience even worst atrocities and anomalies.
