Members of the Yendi Municipal Assembly have rejected President Akufo-Addo’s nominee for Municipal Chief Executive for the area.
Alhaji Ahmed Yussuf Abubakar was rejected in a vote on Friday, September 24, 2021. 21 members voted in favor of the nominee while 20 voted against him out of a total of 41 Assembly Members.
Per the rules, nominees must win two-thirds of the vote to be confirmed.
The development is in a sense punishment for the intransigence of President Akufo-Addo. Alhaji Abubakar was nominated by the President despite a vetting committee recommending Zakaria Abubakari Saddiq for MCE.
Meanwhile, the Northern Regional Minister, Shani Alhassan Shaibu, has reportedly described the failure to confirm the nominee as an unfortunate development, saying he never expected it.
He is said to have pleaded with the assembly members to confirm the man who has been in office already saying they ought to have overwhelmingly voted for him.
If the assembly members reject the nominee in two extra elections, President Akufo-Addo will come under legal constraint to replace him.
