The majority of Ghanaians have no confidence in the Akufo-Addo government’s ability to fight corruption or curb impunity, with some 62% of citizens passing a vote of no-confidence in the administration.
This is according to a post-election survey report of the Centre for Democratic Development-Ghana (CDD-Ghana).
Effectively, Ghanaians estimate the current government as corrupt.
Ghanaians are also split on the government’s ability to ensure the rule of law, according to the survey.
“While Ghanaians are split in their opinion on government’s ability to ensure that rule of law is upheld, the majority however are not confident in the ability of the Nana Addo led-NPP government to protect the country’s financial resources and curb corruption in the next 4 years,” the survey’s damning conclusion went.
According to the report, some 48% of Ghanaians believe in the government’s ability to uphold the rule of law but a counterweight 48% do not think so; 43% believe the country’s financial resources are safe in the hands of the government while 53% do not believe that the government will protect the financial resources.
On the matter of curbing corruption, only 35% were somewhat confident that the government can be trusted to curb it.
Meanwhile, a mixed result was realized when Ghanaians were asked if they had confidence in the government’s ability to fulfil some of the NPP’s 2020 manifesto promises, with some 52% believe the government can consolidate the Free SHS program as against 45% who do not think so.
Some 48% were confident the government will extend electricity to cover the whole country as promised by the NPP while 48% said they did not believe the government will.
A whopping 57% said they did not believe the government can expand the ‘one district, one factory initiative. 40% were confident the government can.
According to the CDD survey, “Ghanaians are also less optimistic about government’s ability to fight corruption and ability to promote collaboration between the ruling and opposition parties.”
On the human rights front, only 39% said they expect improvement in human rights and civil liberties under the Akufo Addo administration, while 29% said they did not have any such expectation.
