The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has agreed to suspend its strike over poor conditions of service 16 days after it commenced the action.
The decision follows an emergency meeting with the National Labour Commission (NLC) and the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations.
A memorandum of agreement between the government and UTAG on Wednesday contained the decision.
As part of the arrangement, the National Labour Commission, the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations also agreed to discontinue all legal processes against the striking lecturers.
This will pave way for negotiations to begin from Monday, August 23, 2021.
It would be recalled that the NLC secured an injunction against the strike, arguing that the law forbids UTAG from proceeding on the industrial action when negotiations are underway.
UTAG would snub the injunction and dare the government to sack all the university teachers if it pleased. Eventually, a cost of Ghc3,000 would be awarded against UTAG.
The Association is demanding the implementation of a 2012 Single Spine package which put entry-level lecturers on a salary of $2,084. This is almost twice the $997.84 they currently receive
