The Ghana Health Services (GHS) is alerting that the Volta, Bono, and Bono East regions have become the latest covid-19 hotspots in the country.
According to the GHS, the caseload from these regions has risen significantly since July 2021.
It is however unclear which of the virus variant is running rampant in the regions, as the GHS confirms that the highly infectious and more deadly Delta variant originating in India had breached the borders of Ghana.
The Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye who gave an update on the country’s case count at a briefing on Wednesday, revealed that the Volta Region which had only 16 cases as of July 1, 2021, has now disturbingly recorded over 532 new cases.
“There has been a very steep rise in the active cases in the last 2 weeks. We have increasing hospitalization and deaths, we’re having some emerging hotspots outside Accra and Kumasi. That is, now we have Volta having new cases, Bono and Bono East also seeing some cases. We also have workplace and school outbreaks taking place,” the GHS boss said.
“We also have seen, as all of you are aware that still, there’s a total disregard to the use of the facemask in the greater population and unfortunately, the delta variant has become the dominant strain as we speak now, especially in Greater Accra Region,” he said.
According to the GHS boss, by August 1, 2021, the Volta, Bono, and Bono East regions have recorded 438, 168, and 138 cases respectively.
Ghana is currently experiencing a near-third wave as active cases in the past month had spiked from about 1,000 to 6,276 Covid-19 currently.
Currently, Ghana’s total caseload stands at 105,512 with some 98,392 of them recovering and 844 dying.
