A soldier in a military pick-up escorting a bullion van has reportedly shot and injured a motorcyclist.
The incident that happened in East Legon- Accra on Friday, July 23, 2021, has sent shivers down the spines of residents who witnessed the shooting.
According to an eyewitness, the soldier shot the motorcyclist without warning and simply drove on moved on behind the bullion van.
According to information gathered by Whatsup News, a team of police officers who reportedly witnessed the incident chased the military pick-up vehicle without success.
“I saw a bullion van coming and behind it was a military pickup. It had a couple of officers at the back. A few seconds later, I saw a biker behind me, and he rode and came next to me trying to give way to the bullion van, and all I heard was a gunshot. A soldier behind the pickup truck shot the biker. They never stopped and drove off. As to what the soldier saw before he shot, I don’t know,” an eyewitness said.
The rider, who sustained gunshot wounds on the hand, was sent to the Bloom Medical Centre for medical attention.
The victim whose name is currently unknown told Accra-based Citi News that he does not recall doing anything wrong to merit the shooting. “I don’t know what I did wrong at that point… I didn’t block them,” he said.
He said he has since received a police medical form and will be undergoing further medical attention at the 37 Military Hospital.
It is unclear if any investigation has been launched into the incident which amounts to the umpteenth time soldiers have brutally shot at civilians without warning and have killed several in less than a year.
The latest was the shooting of protesting locals at Ejura in the Ashanti Region. They opened fire at the townsfolks protesting the gruesome murder of an indigenous social activist, Mohammed Kaaka Ibrahim.
They killed two of the protestors, sparking a commission of inquiry.
