EFUTU SCHOOL Headmistress Bars regnant Student From Writing BECE

Headmistress of the Efutu M/A Basic School in the Cape Coast North district of the Central Region has reportedly vowed to disallow a pregnant student (name withheld) from partaking in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The distraught student and her mother, are appealing to the Ghana Education Service and the Government to call Madam Madam Evelyn Efua Panyin to order.

Cape Coast-based Kingdom FM reports that Madam Panyin often disallows pregnant students from writing the BECE, a draconian measure that is not sanctioned by the Ghana Education Service (GES).

Reportedly, last year, she prevented another pregnant student from writing the BECE, therefore forcing the teenager to defer the exams and only write it later with a junior class.

The current victim says she does not want to go through what the first victim went through and is therefore pleading with the authorities to step into the situation.

The victim’s mother, Mrs. Joana Nkrumah, is reported to have explained that she could not bring herself to force her daughter to go for an abortion because it is illegal.

She acknowledges the child has been truant but says it is no reason to disallow her from writing the exams.
