A group of elite Muslim scholars, the Committee on Muslim Rights, has reported the Deputy Chairman of the Scripture Union of Ghana, Rev. Dr. Samuel Ofori Onwona, to the National Security Minister over alleged hate speech against Muslims.
In a May 5 letter to the Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah, the Committee said there was an urgent need to investigate Dr. Onwona’s incitement of violence and hatred against Muslims, warning that already some radicals of the Muslim community in Ghana are yearning to respond in kind.
“We write as a matter of extreme urgency to lodge an official complaint against the above-mentioned subject for his alleged recording and publication of incendiary, inciteful, and hate speech against Muslims in Ghana,” the Muslim group reported.
“In a viral audio (a copy attached) circulating on social media, the subject of this complaint is heard making statements that have far-reaching consequences for national security. The alleged statements threaten national stability that is founded on religious pluralism, tolerance, and cohesion.”
The letter is signed by Alhaj Prof. Y. S. Peligah Fmr. Dean, Faculty of Creative Arts and Technology of the Kumasi Technical University.
The letter is based on an audio clip that has gone viral. The clip captures the voice of somebody believed to be Dr. Onwona reacting to the brouhaha that arose over the Wesley Girls Senior High School authorities’ refusal to allow some Muslim students to fast during Ramadan.
Excerpts of the explosive audio include a warning by the speaker that Christians are in the majority in Ghana and can also be violent if they are pushed.
The speaker is also heard saying that if the Akufo-Addo government forces Islamic principles down the throat of Ghanaians, the majority Christian population will take a political stance against the ruling party, the NPP.
According to Alhaji Prof. Peligah, a copy of the audio is attached to the letter which is also copied to the IGP and the Director of the Bureau of National Investigations.
The letter added that this is not the first time that Dr. Onwona has inflicted hate speech against Muslims.
“We are particularly worried because this will not be the first time the subject has issued and caused to be published threats and hate speech against Muslims,” the group stated.
The Muslim group wants an investigation to be instituted into these leaked tapes.
