President Nana Akufo-Addo has accepted the nomination of Kissi Agyebeng as Special Prosecutor.
This is according to a statement signed by Jubilee House Spokesman, Eugene Arhin.
According to the statement, the President has by letter to the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin on April 29, sought Parliament’s approval of the appointment.
President Akufo-Addo accepted the resignation from office of Martin Amidu, as Special Prosecutor on November 16, 2020, and, in accordance with section 13(8) of the Office of Special Prosecutor Act, 2017 (Act 959), is required to appoint a replacement within six months of the position becoming vacant.
Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, on April 16, 2021, nominated Mr. Agyebeng, under section 13(3) of Act 959, to the President for consideration as the second occupant of the Office of Special Prosecutor.
However, the nomination of Kissi Agyebeng has since evoked controversy with former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu suggesting the man will be a poodle, and that he had been nominated by Godfred Yeboah Dame to help protect the interest of certain individuals in government in the Agyapa mineral royalties scandalous deal.
In fact, Martin Amidu has parodied Kissi Agyebeng as the “Agyapa Special Prosecutor.”
According to the statement by Eugene Arhin, the President is hopeful that Parliament will expedite the confirmation process of Mr. Kissi Agyebeng, so he can assume the position without delay.
