Soldiers have brutally assaulted a number of journalists covering a demonstration by the residents of the La Traditional who are protesting encroachment by the military on their lands.
Information picked up by Whatsup News today, April 15, 2021 tells of how the fully armed soldiers chased away the protestors and caught up with a few journalists covering the incident.
As at press time, the identities of the reportedly brutalised journalists was not known, but in videos that had gone viral, is heard telling the media personnel not to take any photos, after which he proceeded to give a hot chase.
The protest was mounted by a group within the La Traditional Council called the Coalition of La Associations. The group had reportedly defied orders of the police to suspend their intended demonstration.
In pictures and videos seen by Whatsup News, Soldiers were seen dragging a protestor to the ground who was subsequently hit in the head.
Some soldiers were also seen beating fleeing protestors with sticks.
The land in contention is around the Military Cemetery close to the Airport Hills.
Addressing the media ahead of the demonstration, a spokesperson for the group, Jeffrey Tetteh vowed that the group will not be deterred by the intimidation of the security services.
“We are willing because our forefathers laid down their lives and they shed their blood to regain this land for us. It is our time to also gain the land and bequeath to those generations after us.”
