he Ghana Broadcasting Corporation is reporting that thousands of the AstraZeneca vaccines that the government has allocated to the Northern Region are going to waste due to expiration.
This is because, with many people still not vaccinated, about 20,000 vials will expire in two days’ time from today, April 14, 2021.
Regional Director for Public Health, Hilarius Abiwu, is reported as saying that the first batch of AstraZeneca doses which were manufactured in October 2020, had a life span of half a year.
“So effectively that’s six months will be on the 16th of this month,” he is quoted as saying.
Even worst, a safety directive from the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) means that authorities must deem the vaccines already expired few days before the official expiration date.
“Three days ago, we had more than 5000 doses. And more than 2,000 close to 3,000 of these doses were taken up by people.”
This leaves all other persons who are looking to be administered with the vaccines stranded as the Northern Regional Health Director indicates that “there are more people who are calling for the vaccines,” Mr. Abiwu is quoted as saying.
