Germany’s major newspaper Der Spiegel has described the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, a batch to which Ghana just took delivery of, as “The coronavirus vaccine nobody wants”. Yet, The Akufo Akufo Addo administration held a massive funfair today to receive the vaccine.
However, the world over that same vaccine produced in the United Kingdom is an object of scorn with nobody wanting it because of its proven ineffectiveness in combating COVID-19.
South Africa, Germany, and several European countries have basically pulled the brakes on administering the vaccine. This has sparked disturbing possibilities that this rejected vaccine is what the World Health Organisation, Bill Gates’ GAVI Vaccine Alliance and other international agencies are shipping to the “world’s poorest” countries.
Britain’s Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab was full of enthusiasm about the shipment to Ghana as he gleefully announced: “Today is an important milestone, with GAVI announcing the start of vaccine delivery to the world’s poorest.”
In quick succession, the Bill Gate-funded vaccine alliance called GAVI announced excitedly on its Twitter page, “We’re very proud to announce that 600,000 doses of #COVAX vaccines, the first to be shipped and delivered, have now arrived in Ghana. This is truly a momentous day.”
The glowing announcement consequently prompted the Akufo Addo administration, which probably had no clue about the back story, to organise a massive funfair to receive the consignment. More than 100 officials, including the Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, Information Minister, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah and representatives from the WHO and other diplomats threw caution to the wind and blatantly breached the COVID-19 social distancing protocols prescribed by President Akufo Addo to receive the “free” consignment.
The event was broadcasted live on State broadcaster, GTV with journalists from JoyNews and others rallying Ghanaians to go for their first jab of the vaccine.
However, unknown to these beaming Ghanaian officials, the prestigious British Medical Journal (BMJ) on February 8, 2021, reported how South Africa paused the rollout of the British-produced vaccine because of its uselessness.
“Rollout of the Oxford-AstraZeneca covid-19 vaccine in South Africa has been paused after a study in 2000 healthy and young volunteers reported that it did not protect against mild and moderate disease caused by the new variant (501Y.V2) that emerged there,” the BMJ reported.
South Africa’s health minister, Zweli Mkhize, said that other vaccines, including those from Pfizer and Janssen, would be used in that country instead of the discredited Astrazeneca vaccine.
The Daily Express, UK’s popular newspaper published on its website under the headline “Fury as French and German citizens reject AstraZeneca vaccine after Macron scaremongering” reported how Germans are shunning the vaccine
“Just 150,000 of Germany’s 1.5 million doses of the Oxford-produced vaccine had been used on Friday. The delays are significantly hampering Germany’s inoculation plan, which has now fallen drastically behind Britain’s scheme. The UK has vaccinated more than 26 percent of its population, compared to Germany that has delivered jabs to less than six percent,” The Daily Express reports.
Whatsup News has gathered that only 200 people instead of the expected 3,800 are turning up daily at the Tegel vaccination centre in Berlin, which only administers the AstraZeneca jab.
Essentially, German skepticism has spelled doom for the vaccine, as authorities appeal to citizens to exercise restraint in their rejection of the vaccine.
However, a cross-section of politicians across Germany, and most of Europe, have discredited the Astrazeneca vaccine, a key pillar of Britain’s involvement in the latest global vaccine diplomacy.
The respected German newspaper, Der Spiegel has confirmed the rejection of the vaccine in Germany saying “Briefings in Germany have questioned the vaccine’s efficacy and, alongside many other EU states, officials opted against delivering the shot to over-65s.”
According to Der Spiegel, in an interview with the Rheinische Post newspaper, “even Frank Ulrich Montgomery, the outspoken chair of the World Medical Association, basically declared that the vaccine is a second choice by default. “You can’t gloss over the fact that it’s less effective,” he said. He added that he believes people with a higher risk of infection like medical staff should be vaccinated with more effective vaccines.”
The German Red Cross has reported that in almost 50 instances, people didn’t show up for their vaccination appointment – or they attempted to get a different vaccine.
AstraZeneca has thus far delivered 736,800 doses of its vaccine to Germany, but the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the country’s center for disease control, says that only 106,586 doses of the vaccine have been administered.
The summary results of the studies conducted on the Astrazeneca vaccine as part of the approval process initially quoted efficacy levels of up to 90%, later the figure dropped to 60 percent. And this is in an ideal laboratory situation. In the real world, the figure can be significantly lower.
In fact, the AstraZeneca vaccine is registering as low as 10 percent efficacy in South Africa where a new variant has emerged.
Incidentally, Ghana’s latest upsurge in COVID-19 infections is attributed to both the South African and the UK variants which are reportedly more resistant than the earlier variant that may have come from Wuhan-China.
Disturbingly, international agencies such as the UNICEF are hyping the Astrazeneca vaccine for Ghana as a magic pill, despite all the bad reviews.
In a press statement released today, February 24, 2021, the UNICEF claims: “After a year of disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with more than 80,700 Ghanaians getting infected with the virus and over 580 lost lives, the path to recovery for the people of Ghana can finally begin.”
“This is a momentous occasion, as the arrival of the COVID-19 vaccines into Ghana is critical in bringing the pandemic to an end.”
The UNICEF statement is clearly misinformation, as experts are uncertain that the vaccines will indeed bring the pandemic to an end. Based on this uncertainty, Bill Gates, who is the poster boy of the global vaccine drive is suggesting that to bring the pandemic under control, recipients would have to receive three doses instead of the two doses that was initially communicated.
