Police Officer Shoots Self In The Head On Valentine’s Day

A mid-rank Police Officer, DSP Asiam Divine Yao committed suicide in the early hours of today, the 14th of February, 2021.

The self-slaughter is reported to have happened in his Bortiman residence at Community 18, Tema.

He was with the Legal and Prosecutions Unit in Ashaiman.

The 50-year-old is said to have shot himself in the early hours of Valentine’s Day and was rushed to the Police Hospital.

The Tema Regional Police Command says it has commenced investigations. “Investigation has already commenced unraveling the circumstances of his death. His family has also been informed,” a statement by Public Relations Officer of the Command, C/Inspr. Stella Dede Dzakpasu, said.

DSP Yao’s alleged suicide is the third in the cases of suicide that have rocked the Police in just three weeks.

On January 30, the Half Assini District Police Commander, Supt Cyprian Zenge, reportedly took his life in his house. He similarly, shot himself, and left a note saying, “I am fed up.”

Two days later, Constable Eugene Yelnona of the National Protection Unit (NPU), also shot himself dead while on duty guarding Togolese opposition leader, Gilcrest Olympio, in Mr. Olympio’s residence in Accra.

He shot himself in Mr. Olympios’ bathroom, according to reports. The suicide victim is reported to have sought a leave extension to seek psychological care but had been denied by the Police administration.

It is not clear if the wave of suicides that has hit the Police is only psychological or possibly foul play.
