About 12 more COVID-19 casualties have been recorded in Ghana bringing the total tally of deaths from the disease to 494- six shy of 500, as the second wave ravages Ghana.
In addition to the new data on casualties, the latest infection rate has gone up by 554 new cases as of February 10, 2021, bringing the total number of active cases to 6,948.
Some 113 patients are reportedly in severe conditions and 29 categorised as being in critical conditions.
So far, approximately 73,000 persons have r been infected since the outbreak of the influenza-like pandemic in Ghana in March 2020.
Despite the relatively high infection rate, Ghana is also recording high recovery rates averaging 90%. According to data from the Ghana Health Services (GHS), the number of recovered patients is 66,000 out of the 73,000 caseload.
According to the GHS, a lack of adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols by Ghanaians is responsible for the upsurge in infection.
However, critics have put the blame squarely on Ghanaians politicians who mounted political campaigns with reckless abandon late last year. The current upsurge is seen as a combination of these reckless campaigns, political events and the Christmas festivities.
