EC Refuses To Accept Petition From NDC MPs

Officials of Ghana’s Electoral Commission today refused to turn up and grant audience to Members of Parliament of the Minority National Democratic Congress (NDC) when the MPs marched to the EC Headquarters to present a petition.

After the MPs had managed to fight through two Police barricades and made it to the entrance to the EC Headquarters, neither Jean Mensa, the EC Chairperson nor any of her two deputies, Bossman Asare and Sereboe Quaicoe, turned up to receive the petition.

This is in spite of the fact that Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrissu, who had led the MPs had a day before, December 21st, written to the EC boss, notifying her of the intent to petition the commission.

After waiting for some time, the over fifty MPs presented the petition to the media and left. It demanded the nullification of the declaration of the NPP as winners of the Techiman South Parliamentary election on account of evidence that the NDC won.

Following the declaration by Jean Mensa on December 9, 2020 that President Akufo-Addo had won the 2020 presidential election with some 51% of the total valid votes cast, the country has been plunged into social upheavals.

Ghana is on the precipice after the EC reportedly rigged the 2020 elections for the ruling NPP and President Akufo-Addo.

There is a strong indication that the declaration by the EC was false and that the election had been rigged for Akufo-Addo and the NPP.

The NDC says that its independent collation actually indicates that its candidate, John Mahama won the election with some 50.8% of total votes cast.

What has strengthened the NDC’s case is that the EC, subsequent to declaring results, has readjusted the results six times on its own website, with the votes garnered by Akufo-Addo increasing while those garnered by John Mahama have decreased.

NDC has made it clear it is not accepting the declared results from the heavily flawed elections with members and supporters of the party, demonstrating nationwide.

During one of the protests in Tamale, the First Vice Chairman of the NDC, Chief Sofo Awudu Azorka, vowed that the NDC will also swear in John Mahama as President on 7th January if the results declared by the EC are not changed.
