Power FM’s Oheneba Released On Bail

Oheneba Boamah Bennie, the Power FM journalist who was invited by the Police and then arrested over supposed threats on the lives of President Akufo-Addo has been bailed.

According to reports, the bail happened this evening after his lawyer, Francis Xavier Sosu, sweated the Police over the legality of keeping the journalist for what should be a misdemeanor for almost 48 hours.

His bail is quoted as Ghc100, 000 with two sureties to be justified. He is also supposed to report to the Police on 17th December.

Oheneba had posted a video of himself on Facebook raising issues with President Akufo-Addo’s alleged secret meeting with judges of the Supreme Court in the wake of what is largely seen as the rigged elections of 2020 which is likely to end up in court.

The Police said they were holding the journalist on allegations of Offensive Conduct conducive for breach of the Peace under Sections 207 and 208 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960, Act 29.

Oheneba who had been invited to the Police Station on Monday, the 14th of December had subsequently been arrested and kept in custody fort two days. His lawyer, celebrated human rights defender and MP-elect for Madina, Xavier Sosu, challenged the Police on the grounds of Habeas Corpus.

According to the renowned human rights and public interest lawyer, keeping his Client beyond 48hours was a violation of Article 14 of the 1992 Constitution.

Lawyer Sosu insisted that the offense in question was a misdemeanor and had to do with an alleged statement which the police already had and did not require any complex investigation.
