A group of feminists say they see a definitive chance that Ghana will have its first female Vice President at the December polls, in the person of the opposition National Democratic Congress’ (NDC)’s running mate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang.
This was the resolution that came out of a conference held by the Forum of Alliance of Feminist CSOs in Accra on Wednesday.
It was themed: “Women’s Participation in Election 2020” a program that also advocates for the election of more women to Parliament this year.
However, the focus of a campaign for Affirmative action at the polls was Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, the first-ever Ghanaian woman to have any meaningful chance of becoming Vice President of Ghana, over 60 years after the country gained independence in 1957.
“We have acknowledged that one of the political parties has a vice-presidential candidate. We have a special interest in that one because it will be great if Ghana has the second person in command as a woman”, said Prof. Agnes Tia Apusigah, Member of the Advisory Board of Alliance of Feminist CSOs.
She adds, “…This is a very qualified woman. She is somebody who has demonstrated beyond all doubt locally, nationally and internationally her competence and contributions so we are also rallying support for her candidature and appeal to Ghanaians to give women a second chance”.
Prof. Tia Apusigah is also the Vice President of ReCAS, in the Bongo District of the Upper East.
AFCSOs acknowledged the fact that the Progressive Peoples Party (PPP) also has former Miss Ghana, Brigitte Dzogbenuku as Presidential Candidate, however, the feminists CSOs did not delude itself of the fact that Madam Dzogbenuku’s chances are very remote. Prof. Opoku Agyemang’s party, the NDC, has been alternating with the ruling NPP, in government.
Incidentally, the NPP’s leader, President Akufo-Addo, has said that Ghanaian women have not yet earned a place at the decision-making table. Feminists’ CSOs disagreed resoundingly with the chauvinistic mentality of the President.
