Despite the deafening outcry against the controversial US$150 being charged each arriving traveller at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) for COVID-19 testing, the former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, says the test is value for money.
According to him who is currently an outcast in his party, he had always criticised the fee until he travelled to Guinea and missed his flight because of the delay of the COVID-19 test, a situation he described as very uncomfortable.
Reacting on his Twitter page, the Founder of the Atta Mills Institute, said though the $150 is high it can produce COVID results in less than 30 minutes.
“Honestly, I was a critic of the $150 COVID test @ KIA till I travelled to Guinea; missed flights bcos COVID test results over there took days to be completed. $150 is high but if it can produce COVID results in less than 30 minutes; the time value of money becomes key.”
What Mr. Anyidoho failed to mention is that the test at KIA is an Antigen test, and such tests are generally that fast to record a result. Also, such Antigen tests cost a maximum of US$ 30 worldwide.
Ghana is one of three countries fleecing its citizens such a high charge for the test that experts have described as generally unreliable when done once.
The test is being undertaken by Frontier Healthcare Services, a company whose beneficial owners are held in secret, and who holding company is registered in a notorious tax haven in Dominica.
Indeed, the angry outburst of Ghanaian travellers has forced the Akufo Addo administration to consider slicing the price tag on the testing. Dr. Okoe Boye recently hinted at this.
Mr. Anyidoho is described by many members of his party as having turned a “bootlicker” of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), particularly after he was arrested for his utterances some months ago and released to be of good conduct.
His support for one of the most hated policies of the Akufo Addo administration is therefore seen as a classic exhibition of the bootlicking he is being accused of.
