Energy Minister Promotes Illegal Okada Business - WhatsUp News

Energy Minister Promotes Illegal Okada Business

Energy Minister, John Peter Amewu, is encouraging the illegal commercial motorcycle business in the Hohoe Municipality.

He has donated motorbikes and helmets to the Okada Riders Association of Hohoe as part of his campaign to be MP for the area.

A video of the donation has gone viral with many people who have seen it wondering if the Minister is not encouraging lawlessness.

In the video, Amewu is seen telling members of the jubilant Okada riders association that he is unhappy about the fact that the association is rather weak, encouraging them to strengthen their ranks and structures.

The Energy Minister’s donation is coming after former President Mahama promised to have the Okada business regulated upon being re-elected to lead the country in December.

The former President argues that Okada is an important feature of the transportation culture in Ghana even though it is illegal, people still use it a lot.

Also, he pointed out that the business is an important source of employment for many youthful people in the country.

Mr. Mahama’s announcement was met with criticisms from the governing NPP which claimed that his promise was out of desperation for votes.
