Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, today urged the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Mike Ocquaye to adjourn Parliament sine dine, saying MPs are tired and deserve a well-earned break.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament today after MPs had been recalled for emergency business, the Suame MP said after the emergency sittings that have brought MPs back to the house on three occasions after sitting was suspended has worn out the MPs.
“Upon completion of the determined agenda, the Business Committee will strongly urge you to adjourn the meeting indefinitely to enable honourable members to enjoy a well-deserved rest from the very recent tiring parliamentary duties,” he told the Speaker.
The Majority Leader’s position is a new one after his side of the house had sided with the Speaker against the Minority over Rt. Hon. Mike Ocquaye’s decision to suspend, rather than adjourn sitting.
According to the Speaker, Parliament could not go on break because of Ghana’s embattlement by Covid-19.
By the suspension, the MPs were put on standby for emergency callback to the House for business at any time. Today’s sitting was the third time that MPs had been called back.
They considered tax exemptions on donations towards the Covid-19 fight.
