The Deputy General Secretary of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Obiri Boahene has exposed a possible link between the Electoral Commission’s (EC) determination to compile a new voters register against all odds and the believe of the ruling party that only a new register will facilitate its win in the December 2020 general elections.
A statement intercepted by Whatsup News purportedly coming from Nana Obiri Boahene read: My attention has been draw to an order for interim injunction in circulation by Sam George, NDC’s Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram constituency refraining the electoral commission from conducting a workshop for its members tomorrow. I wish to reiterate that we win the next election with new voters register or loose it with the current one.”
The statement reportedly aimed at NPP strategists went ahead to outline a sinister plan of action, including pushing the Attorney-General to call the EC “as early as possible” to give them the go ahead to continue with their workshop.
Also, Nana Obiri Boahene’s alleged statement is also requesting that Justice John Eugene Nyante Nyadu, who granted the injunction against the EC should be “brought to book” to “serve as a lesson” to his colleagues not to disadvantage the governing party.
“Whether or not there is COVID-19, we careless. Our focus should be on the compilation of a new voters register,” Nana Obiri Boahene reportedly wrote in what is a direct reproduction of an earlier statement he made on his Facebook wall that drew serious backlash resulting in him issuing a quick apology for his slip.
“Consequently, any other matter about the COVID-19 can be discussed after the new voters register has been compiled. Our party is not the office of the Ghana health directorate. We should leave the COVID-19 fight to the health professionals and focus on how to win the next election.”
The Deputy Scribe of the governing party also made a startling revelation in the statement being attributed to him. According to him, President Akufo Addo has promised to lift the ban on social gathering before Monday, 4th May, 2020 to allow the electoral commission to announce their date for commencing the new voters register compilation.
Late March 2020, the President was forced by the rapidly spreading contagion of the deadly Covid-19 to impose a ban on large public gathering and a lockdown of certain party of the country. However, despite the unabated rate of infection, the President controversially lifted the lockdown in citing “Scientific data”.
However, critics are convinced, that the President only lifted the lockdown for political reasons such as allowing the EC to commence compiling the new register. Indeed, Nana Obiri Boahene on his much-bashed Facebook post mentioned how the NPP executives impressed upon the President to lift the lockdown.
“As a party, we must work within the timelines given to us by the electoral commissioner and her deputies. Finally, we dance to NDC’s diversionary tactics at our own peril. The earlier we remain focused on this voters register, the better,” the statement allegedly composed by Nana Obiri Boahene concluded.
