Ghana on Ventilators-Mahama

The Presidential Candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), ex-President John Dramani Mahama has raised red flags that the Ghanaians economy has crippled and was currently on ventilators.

The former president, speaking in a live broadcast on Thursday, said the propaganda used by the Akufo-Addo administration to present a rosy economy has backfired, as the raging Covid-19 coronavirus has exposed the true health of the Ghanaians economy which is currently “ on ventilators and it needs thinking to rescue it from the ICU.”

“They said the economy has been the best that we have ever had since independence… a leading member of this government told us the economy was so robust…that for three months if anything happens to us, we would be able to survive. We have not been able to survive even one month,” the ex-president jabbed the Akufo Addo administration of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to the ex-President, If Ghana had not “run to the IMF for the $1billion rapid credit facility,” the economy would have been thrown into a state of total anarchy.

President Mahama had faced a similar situation while managing the Ghanaian economy between 2012 and 2016 and had also “run to the IMF” for a quick bailout of US$ 1 billion. His administration was criticised heavily for being “incompetent”.

However, the table appears to have turned on the NPP, especially during the current Covid-19 outbreak.

President Mahama has suggested that the current administration should cut out frivolous spending and provide enough buffer and create fiscal space that can absorb the economic shocks caused by the global Covid-19 pandemic.
